AWIS Forst Advisroy: High Chances for Frost Coming Week

High chances for Rain, followed by frost week of March 27

in collaboration with AWIS weather services

Dear all,

The following days will be characterized by warmer temperatures and quite some rain fall. More rain will move in from Texas to South Carolina and Georgia over Sunday, and hit North Carolina finally on Monday. Clear nights with little wind will follow Tuesday to Wednesday (Mar 28-29) night, and again from Wednesday to Thursday night (Mar 29-30) (Figure 1).

During those nights the frisk for frost is high in most regions at the Eastern shore. However, there is slightly increased frost risk in the NC Piedmont as well as in Western NC and northern states in the night from Monday to Tuesday (Mar 27-28). Please check your local weather, especially for the night from Monday to Tuesday if you are in one of the riskier areas.

In most cases, the use of floating row covers or overhead sprinklers will be sufficient to protect open blossoms from frost damage.

If floating row-covers are used, it looks like in most regions there will be sufficent time on for row-covers to dry off after the rain!
