Dear all,

I want to add only a few things to todays’ weather update. Many of you called me and/or Barclay over the last few days and I found that there are some information, which are worth wile sharing with everyone. One thing to consider is that, although it looks like many regions in the Southeast will become a little warmer over the next few days, it is only mid March.

Or as Bob Rouse from Maryland said in his email earlier today: “My biggest fear in March are the cold desiccating winds on the strawberries. I observed some on berries were the covers blew off or had big holes.”

Winds:

Today we in NC also experienced some strong windgusts in most parts of NC. That is quite normal if weather changes (as today). However, those gusts can harm row covers. So it is important to have a second ready-to-go choice of cold protection installed.

Barclay indicated today how useful it can be to track current conditions (https://strawberries.ces.ncsu.edu/2018/03/field-observations-on-a-frosty-night-always-make-you-more-confident-and-nc-sc-ga-va-md-ky-updates-230-pm-thur-march-15-2018/)

The CRONOS tool https://climate.ncsu.edu/cronos

shows real-time data not only for NC, but for many other states in the Southeast as well. I have attached a small picture guideline how to use it.

CRONOS Use: Click on map or type in your location

CRONOS Use: Step 2: Click on the left upper mark.

CRONOS Use: Step 3: Chose the parameter you want to observe

Current Windspeed (8 p.m., 3/15/2018).

Another good tool to survey frequently for predicted wind speeds is the avaitation tool http://www.windy.com

Measured and Predicted Temperatures:

As Barclay and I pointed out several times, the predicted temperatures and the actual temperatures on your plants can vary quite a bit.  Tom Baker from Virginia indicated yesterday to me two important things: frost events can occur not only in the morning, they can also occur over night.

The last thing I want to share is that after the few days with warm temperatures, colder temperatures are on the horizon for mid next week (Below you see the predicted MIN Temperatures for Thursday, 3/22).

Please use these information with Barclays earlier post. https://strawberries.ces.ncsu.edu/2018/03/field-observations-on-a-frosty-night-always-make-you-more-confident-and-nc-sc-ga-va-md-ky-updates-230-pm-thur-march-15-2018/

You find links to HOURLY 10-day prediction. Those update automatically every time you use the link.

As always we hope this helps.
