Collapse ▲Figs. 1a – 1b. (1a) Cronos temperatures across the region at about 6:40 a.m.; (1b) The AWIS minimum temperature map posted yesterday – the relatively low temperatures recorded in Eastern NC and coastal areas were perhaps the biggest surprise!
Good morning!
This was a serious event! I appreciate all the early morning feedback from from growers in VA-NC-SC:
VA – “ground frost in Hanover”…”had turn on sprinklers at 2:30 a.m. at farm west of Richmond”
NC – pretty widespread frost…
- Sanford – “pretty good frost here in Sanford this morning…think it was about 34 minimum”
- Greensboro – “it got down to 33..frost in low lying areas…winds died down at 9 p.m.…can’t trust those darn wind forecasts” (Editor’s note: I spoke with this grower at 6 p.m. Friday evening and we discussed how AWIS was showing winds of 7-9 mph through this morning?)
- Faison – “spotty frosts…we did apply row covers…did not water”
- Seven Springs – “definitely had frost here”
Easley, SC – Eric Hunter:
- 31 here (7:40 a.m.). Frost on covers. Air underneath is 40. Did not use drip. Skybit showing minimum 35 for Sunday
- Please see Clyde Gurosik’s update at bottom of advisory (I did not see it until a minute ago)
Fig. 2. Even though a lot of blooms were lost to the March Freezes, the really good news is that just about everyone is picking their earliest crop ever, and FLAVOR is AMAZING!!! This photo of Tina and John Gross in Sanford shows what a great crop of Camarosa strawberries is being picked North Carolina’s Sandhills region. Growers in piedmont areas like Greensboro will start picking good volumes of berries in the coming week. In speaking with Kenneth Rudd last night (Greensboro), he said he could never remember better flavor on Albion in the early season. He also had some questions about plants for next season, as this week and next is when nursery growers need to make their planting decisions! I would encourage all growers to take a moment this week to “think about” their plant requirements for this fall.
We’ve got one more night to go!
By all means, enjoy the great weather on tap for today. Unfortunately, there is a pretty good chance of frost again tomorrow morning (Sunday). The minimum temperatures tonight could actually be lower than this morning. I just examined the situation over in Kenansville, NC – this area may have dodged a bullet last night, but I am not so sure about tonight? First, winds will become perfectly still (0 mph) by about 8 p.m. (2000), skies are clear, and the air temp min for Sunday is 35 (it was 36 this morning). If you open the pdf for Kenansville you will see AWIS is showing “F”(rost) at 5 a.m. (sunrise is 6:48 a.m.). Dewpoints are high (35 at 5 a.m.). If you are using row cover protection, be sure to get your picking done earlier in the day today, and re-apply covers in mid-to-late afternoon to get maximum heat bulid-up. As a precaution, you might want to consider doing some drip irrigation at around 5 a.m. and run until a little after sunrise. Again, there is this nagging concern about getting a frost beneath the cover with such moist air.
Good luck!

SC Report
Friends,
Please see the attached photos with appropriate captions. Canopy temperature dropped to 30F and all crops were totally protected with high capacity, solid set overhead irrigation.
4938 – Frosty ground around our fields 4/8/17
4947 Overhead irrigation protection of MASTER STRAWBERRIES, and the MASTERS golfers teeing off in the background where the fog is lifting on Washington Road.
4929 High rise, overhead irrigation protection of trellised hybrid blackberries, with frost protection of strawberries and staked tomatoes in the background.
4942 – 6 acres of high trellis, hybrid blackberries in bloom being frost protected with overhead irrigation.
4951 (will include in later advisory)- These Camarosa strawberries are in their 6th solid week of production and going strong. Please note the buried, solid set irrigation plays a major role in reliable, cost effective frost protection. The row covers and rock bags also pictured are more of an “insurance policy” for limited protection and special challenges like an airborne freeze. They will provide “limited protection” of about 8F, whereas the overhead irrigation system can provide protection of 20+ degrees F. When integrated together they can provide really excellent protection for most frost/freeze scenarios.
4935 (will include in later advisory)- Early summer squash, staked Parks Whopper tomatoes, pickles and strawberries (background) all being cost effectively frost protected together with solid set, overhead irrigation. We can’t pull row covers over staked tomatoes or high trellis hybrid blackberries, but overhead irrigation protects all very well.
4949 (will include in later advisory)- High capacity diesel pumping units are great for reliable, cost effective frost protection. They also continue to protect during storm related power losses when there is no electrical service. Unfortunately, they cost about $25K each and Berry Plantation uses 2, plus a back-up spare.
Hope this gives you a picture of a FROSTY MASTERS SATURDAY, START.
Sincerely,
Clyde
