Collapse ▲Fig. 1. This is a Chandler plant in Rustburg, VA, that has truly been through quite an ordeal last week (photo taken on Sunday, March 19). The grower managed to keep most of his blooms alive on Chandler. The grower wrote, “Chandler seems to keep the blooms tucked into the plant canopy better and I think that helped this variety.” I have had reports of both Sweet Charlie and Camino Real having more issues with these freezes. This particular grower also said, “What’s impressive to me as that some of these (Chandler) blooms must have come through three sub twenty nights with two covers….. a one and a quarter with a .9 on top.

Fig. 1. This is the current Wed morning forecast map for Thur morning’s lows. Pink areas in 30-32 range, and this covers a pretty broad area! If winds become still, and dew points are high enough, there could be potential for radiation frost Thursday morning in areas with minimums below 32 F.
Let’s glance at the AWIS minimum temp table (next) to see if there are any areas of the state of NC that may have minimums below 28 F for tomorrow morning (just click this pdf): NC Temp Mins
Please note in piedmont that Louisburg will see a minimum of 28 F and Rocky Mount Wilson 29 F (Thur morning). Those locations could be borderline! If the air temp in canopy drops below 28 F, there could be damage to open blooms. Dew points in Rocky Mount may be in the mid-20s tomorrow morning, and AWIS is showing FROST for Rocky Mount at 5 a.m. Rocky Mount
Please also note a 2nd morning of FROST is very likely on Friday morning. Looking at the same Rocky Mount AWIS product, Rocky Mount, you can see FROST starting at 3 a.m.
Here is the statewide min temp map for NC on Friday:
In Fig. 3 (below) you can see the min temp map for Friday morning. Good luck!!
