Fig. 1. Minimum Temp Map for Monday morning - the more worrisome part of this week is
Wed (fig 3), and Thur (fig. 4)
Fig. 2. Min temps for Tuesday
Fig. 3. Many parts of state in mid-to-low 20s (gray, light red and red); yellow
represents upper teens

Fig. 4. Things worsen on Thursday - this map even shows light green areas (14-16 F)
and green (12-14), with a smaller area in WNC in blue (10-12 F). However, the
damage potential of this cold event is potentially more serious in areas
of state where crop is very advanced (due to warm periods this winter), and growers
will have to consider options like double row covers (if available). However with
temperatures in upper teens for some areas, the option of rowcover + sprinkling may
be the best way to handle what some are now calling, The Big Daddy Freeze! A digital thermometer with thermocouple wire "stuck" right into strawberry
blossom is best way to monitor blossom temps beneath the row cover. If
you see blossom temps slipping below 32 F, it is critical to "add heat" to
the system by running irrigation system. Monitoring the blossom temps with
a digital thermometer is the only way to "navigate" when doing this
procedure. Would a ships captain leave port without navigation equipment? Digital thermometer gives a read out of blossom temperature in real time. This unit was being used for heat protection. Growers can use the same
set up to monitor bloom temps beneath ice covered row covers. It will
tell you whether you are possibly losing the patient! The open bloom needs
to stay above 28 F no matter what. We always try to get water running on top
of row covers before the bloom temps are dropping below 32 F - don't
want problems at start-up! Fig. 5. Minimums on Friday
