Good evening!

I am just getting back this Monday evening from the Strawberry Research Farm in Elm City where we will be having tomorrow’s Strawberry Twilight Meeting and BBQ (4:30-7:30 p.m.). Research Farm’s GPS address is 5451 Lindsey Rd, Elm City, NC 27822.

driving mapFig. 1. Take Exit 127 off of I-95 for Hwy 97 East. If coming from Raleigh, you will turn right at top of ramp onto 97 East – you will go about 2.6 miles and come to intersection with Hwy 58 – there is a light. You will go through this intersection (stay straight) and go another 0.7 mile, and look for Exxon on right. Turn right just after Exxon Station onto Carter Rd. You will continue straight, and will come to blinking light – you will go through the blinker light, and continue on this road for about 1.5 miles (you will go by County Line Raceway on right)…you will be looking for Lindsey Rd – a right hand turn off Stagecoach. Then it is a very short ways down Lindsey to farm site – you will see a white tent down in  field on right side of road. Turn at old tin barn. If you have any questions, call (or text) Cortney Driver at 919-390-8190. The program begins at 4:30 p.m.

rowsFig. 2. The rows will be marked with variety names – there are 8 different varieties being tested in the trial, including 4 from Lassen Canyon (Sweet Ann, Ruby June, Scarlet and Lucia).

After 3 harvests, we have recorded this data from 3 replications:

Variety Plant Date Ave. berry size (g) Market yield (lbs/A)
Ruby June 10/10/15 26.6 2,894
Ruby June 9/30/15 22.4 2,857
Merced 9/30/15 25.0 2,758
San Andreas 9/30/15 22.4 2,613
Merced 10/10/15 27.5 2,379
San Andreas 10/10/15 23.7 2,119
Cabrillo 9/30/15 20.6 1,991
Cabrillo 10/10/15 25.4 1,935

Albion 10/10/15 23.2 1,147
Lucia 10/10/15 22.3    821
Scarlet 10/10/15 30.8    511
Lucia 9/30/15 21.8    460
Scarlet 9/30/15 26.3    412

One very interesting development over the weekend was the 1/2 inch rain that we got at this location on Saturday night. We had the low tunnels protecting the Sweet Ann variety from this rain, and I could see a pretty shocking difference this afternoon – the protected Sweet Ann had perhaps 5-10% loss from rain, but the unprotected sustained very serious  losses.

tunnelFig. 2. The sides of the tunnel were raised today (Mon), but over the weekend we had two of the Sweet Ann rows protected by low tunnels, and there are some pretty interesting differences!
