Collapse ▲Happy Spring Everyone!
Fig. 1. A Maryland grower just sent this to me at 10:30 a.m., and said, “this is silly.” Well, the good news is that the cover will stay in place!
Good morning,
With winds in 20s and gusts even higher, it could prove to be a real challenge keeping those covers on! I did speak with a grower who started sprinkling on his covers this morning to hold them down, but I am not in favor of that practice because of the extra moisture he is adding to the microclimate beneath the cover. I am very hesitant to do anything that could improve the odds of a frost under the cover tomorrow morning. And, conditions might actually favor this if you are sprinkling on covers during the day today!
Another rather confusing issue relates to whether watering needs to be continuous, or not, for sprinkling on top of a cover. In other words, do you just make the igloo and you’re done. No! Once you start sprinkling, keep sprinkling on the covers until the digital thermometer tells you the blossom is safely above 32 F in the morning tomorrow.
Due to high call volume this morning I am a little late in getting this regional update sent out. Good luck tonight!
