VA, SC, TN, KY and MD Update (6:15 PM, Tue., 3/25/14)

— Written By Barclay Poling

Good evening!

We have had a super busy day in NC trying to figure out what is really happening with the weather (many flip flops happening), and now we have just learned that tomorrow morning (Wed) will be COLDER than Thur morning in East Central Piedmont areas! This may cause growers to actually consider sprinkling on row covers tonight in some NC areas where the crop is pretty advanced, as the new lows for Wed morniing are such that it will be difficult to protect popcorn and open blossom stage under row cover (1.25) with some additional heat from sprinkling on top of covers. It is interesting how on same farm and same variety we have fields that are dangerously advanced with  south and east exposure, but with more north and west, they are still holding! Of course, wherever the grower had been using row covers this winter, those plants are def. more advanced than non covered. I really like the double cover option in a week like this, but few growers have the extra covers.

Got this note from Eric Hunter at noon:

Here is where we sit right now:  SkyBit has dropped us to 20 in the canopy – all other services has us in the mid 20s. Winds up all night. We will likely hit 17-18 in the canopy. I’m assuming this is a classic night to run the water on top of the covers, yes?
We have never had to irrigate on the top of covers before. However, there was one time many years ago where that was the plan – however, by the time the blossom temperatures dropped to the point of having to turn on, the air temps had already frozen the standing water in some of our irrigation valves, risers, and smaller sub-lines. Therefore, we couldn’t irrigate. So having said that, my plan would be to turn on the water earlier than I need to tonight if there is even a possibility of needing to do both.
Should be an interesting night if nothing else.
Eric

Editor note:
A lot of growers will run water on covers for Wed night and Thur morning – the Rudds in Greensboro chose to do it tonight as they may get to 22 and their covers will probably freeze tonight b/c of rains today and no dry time.http://strawberries.ces.ncsu.edu/2014/03/still-a-good-idea-to-apply-row-covers-this-afternoon-in-eastern-part-of-nc-1-pm-32514/

Note from Clyde Gurosik a few minutes ago…

Dr. Poling,

Just read your advisory about NOT sprinkling ALONE during a windborne freeze. Dead ACCURATE!!! The best way I would describe it to a new grower is the result would look like a “PROPANE TORCH BURN OF ALL PLANT PARTS, not just the bloom!!

Long ago, we started up overhead protection ALONE with a clipper 100 miles north and not forecast to drop south to us. It did drop 4 hours after sprinkling started and the wind went from 0 to 25mph and FRIED the plants like a torch! This might create a clearer picture for a new grower.
Sincerely,
Clyde
