NC grower questions on Sunday (weather related)
-
Dr. Poling,Now for the next round of questions. We are back to popcorn/tight bulb stage with everything more advanced still under the row covers. Looking at 30 degree low with frost at midnight till eight in the morning. The question is that since everything starting to emerge is inside the plant canopy would watering be necessary at these temps? We have the water and the sleep to keep everything going but with all the rain I am questioning if more irrigation is potentially doing more damage.
NC grower question on Sunday (not sure what is causing this?)
- Dr. Poling have been meaning to seen u a few pic but with all this cold weather it’s being difficult. I have about 60 plants in the middle of my c amorosa field that looks like this??? The plant next to it looks great do u know what I need to do to make these plants green???
- Reply – Advise us on anything that you might have done with herbicide? Could you have doubled up? I cannot think of anything else that could cause this sort of symptom up and down these 2 rows.
MS grower questions on Sunday:
- Hey dr poling, I am a diversified vegetable grower in north ms and grow a bit less than an acre of plasticulture strawberries each year. My berries are growing on a calcareous silt loam this year that has a ph of 7.5 and I am seeing signs of what looks to be iron chlorosis in the new growth. The crop is on a new farm that I am transitioning to organic and due to the high ph I knew that I should have applied iron, zinc, and copper sulfate before planting but I neglected to do it. I am curious about how much to worry about these nutrient deficiencies and if you could recommend a remedy. I am currently fertigating with fish hydrolysate that has an iron content of 125 ppm. Thanks for any help you can provide, I have attached a few pictures.
Sincerely, will reed

Reply – The oldest leaves on these plants have much shorter petioles (typical of cold season), and then you have had a real growth spurt in recent days as the newes leaves are very stretched, and are exhibiting what would appear to be Fe chlorosis of young leaf blades. When the deficiency is mild, veins – including veinlets – turn green. The classic CA Bulletin 1917 on strawberry deficiencies, “Strawberry Deficiency Symptoms – A visual and plant analysis guide to fertilization,” by Ulrich, Mostafa and Allen (1992), mentions a correction measure of using a spray treatment with Fe at 1.5 to 3.0 oz/100 gal on foliage that can be done on a trial basis only and with caution, because damage to flowers may occur! I would very quickly involve the MS Extension service to assist you.
Another grower from MS writes today:
Dr. Poling,
Virginia – I noted in the Ashland area (north of Richmond) a forecast of FROST on Tuesday morning (below). Tom Baker (VA Beach and Chesepeake) wrote this morning that,
“If forecasts for winds and cloud cover are anything near correct, we should be okay.
But we know how those can go, so, yes, we’ll be watching (referring to possibility of frost tomorrow morning). ”

In looking at the Chesepeake area, it does look fairly safe over next few days:
