Figure 1. ‘Florida Sensation’ in Plant City, 1/17/14 (photo by B. Poling, Professor Emeritus, NCSU). This plant had had sprinkling for frost protection the night before this photo was taken for 2 hours, and I could not detect any real issues with flavor and texture. Radiance (not shown) is fast becoming most important strawberry variety in the FL industry today, and it is enjoying enormous popularity worldwide (called Fortuna in other countries).

Good morning!

How I wish I was back in Florida! I was a participant last week in the International Strawberry Conference that was co-hosted by Universtiy of Florida – Gulf Coast Research and Education Center and Eckland Marketing Group: 2014 Strawberry Conference_FloridaAnd, in Figure 1 you can see one of their breeder’s newest varieties, Florida Sensation. I was very impressed by this newest Florida variety. It was producing quite early, and had incredible berry size. Prices were running around $18-20/flat last week. Volume was starting to pick up some in FL, but they have also had chilly temperatures to contend with as well. THE HEATWAVE in southern CA is pushing putting their crop on a fast track. Good article yesterday on CA Drought (Governor Declares Drought State Of Emergency
http://www.growingproduce.com/production/irrigation/california-governor-declares-drought-state-of-emergency/  ).

SkyBit’s accuracy at Clayton…(got to 15 F in canopy this morning)

Very quickly, I just got my Clayton, NC, SkyBit at 7 am and noted that our minimum was 13 F in the canopy this morning, and 17 F at weather shelter height. Last night they (SkyBit) predicted a canopy of only 15 F – we were 2 F colder. SkyBit said it would be

Attachment-1

Figure 2. The official low this morning a Clayton was 17.3 F at 5 am (Weather Shelter). SkyBit called for 17 F last night (at weather shelter), and 15 F in strawberry canopy this morning, but the canopy was around 13 F.

What’s next for NC?

I can sure tell you that we won’t be picking up any Growing Degree Day units over the next week or so! This arctic clipper is not through with us yet! Bitter cold is expected tonight and tomorrow morning. I extracted the table below from the AWIS minimum temperature table for all of NC: NC AWIS Jan 23 to 30  BUT, PLEASE NOTE HOW COLD IT WILL BE ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE END OF THIS MONTH!! LOOK AT ASHEVILLE – IT WILL BE 8 F ON JAN 30 (THUR).

VA Grower’s Feedback: (Tom Baler, VA Beach) – Colder than Jan 7…

Hello Barclay,

We reached a low of 10.0 F at home in Pungo last night; compare to low of 13.3 the morning of January 7 (nearest WeatherUnderground personal weather station, about 2 miles from our farm).

On Jan. 7, we were “at” 13.3 degrees for 30 minutes, after sunrise. Last night, we were below 13.3 degrees for 11 hours – from 9:15 p.m. to 8:13 a.m. We were below 11 degrees for 4 hours of that time.

As for hours below 20 degrees – 3:10 a.m. yesterday to “now” (now being 8:30 a.m.) is over 30 hours, and counting! We are forecast to go above 20 by 9 a.m., but it’s going to have to hurry to do that. We had essentially no wind from 6:15 last night until 8:00 this morning, so plant-level temps were, indeed, cold, even under covers I would guess.

In Chesapeake, one nearby WUnderground PWS recorded below 10 degrees for 10 hours last night, with a low of 6.1, but I wonder about calibration of that station since it is often a few degrees under other stations in the same general area. The three Chesapeake stations I watch most often (all three within a couple miles of our Chesapeake farm) said 11.7, 10.8, and 10.0 for last night’s lows.

 CORRECTION

— Barclay, I think I need new glasses or reading lessons, one or the other! Maybe I was reading 22 as 20?

Correct hours below 20 degrees:
·        Yesterday:  4:25 a.m. (not 3:10) until 11:55 a.m. = 7 hours 30 minutes.
·        Yesterday:  12:20 p.m. until 12:35 p.m. = 15 more minutes.
·        Yesterday:  5:35 p.m. until midnight = 6 hours 25 minutes.
TOTAL yesterday:  14 hours 10 minutes

The high yesterday afternoon was 22.3 for about 15 minutes at 4 p.m.

·        Today:  midnight until 9 a.m. = 9 hours

I don’t know what I was seeing earlier. Sorry! Still ##@!** cold!

Bitter cold in MD!

Btter in MD

A Salute to Mike Wilder!

I received this message from Mike Wilder, Extension Agent, Nash Co.

“Hi Folks,

I’m a little bit sad, and at the same time excited to share this with you. I will begin work on February 3rd  as NCDA’s Regional Agronomist in Region 6. This includes Warren, Vance, Franklin, Nash, Edgecombe, Halifax, and Northampton Counties. My 14 years working with you has been very rewarding and educational. Thank you for your support and friendship during this time. I look forward to continuing a cooperative relationship with all, and especially the counties in Region 6.

Best wishes to all,

Mike Wilder”

Editor – Yes, we will miss you in Extension BIG TIME Mike, but thank goodness you will still be out there with the growers as the NCDA’s Regional Agronomist in Region 6! Congatulations!

P.S. How to keep paying for these advisories??   I only wish we had some big time grant to keep paying for the Stawberry Weather Alerts, but we don’t! The idea for this service only came about in mid-Dec 2013, and  alerts were being sent out about this crazy winter weather even before we had $10,000 mark. As of today we have raised $13,350. We are really close to our goal of $15,000. If we can raise another $1650, we can pay for the meteorological support services required to produce these alerts, including the 2-week FORECASTS and 30 Day Outlooks that are generated each Sunday night and go out to you on Monday morning. The hope is to keep these weekly Outlooks going past mid-Feb, but right now we are in some definite difficulty in keeping these outlooks coming to you past that time. If we could get a little assistance, we could expand the 30 Day Ag Weather Outlook VA – TN- NC – SC, to include Georgia?

1. Checks can be made payable to:   NC Agricultural Foundation

2. A letter from you is also needed:

A simple letter must be included that states The enclosed check for $??? is an unrestricted gift to support Dr. Poling’s strawberry weather advisory program The letter should not include anything else.

 3. The address for mailing your check and brief letter:

Dr. Barclay Poling, Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Hort. Sci., Campus Box 7609NC State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-7609

THAT SHOULD DO IT! THANKS!!
